Things to know before booking your Fremantle to Rottnest Island day trip
Why choose Fremantle as your departure point Departing from Fremantle gives you the fastest access to Rottnest Island, with a short 25–30 minute ferry—ideal if you want to maximise time on the island.
Ferry vs. bundled experiences: Most bookings include return ferry transfers and island admission. You can upgrade with bike hire, guided bus tours, snorkelling, or other activities depending on how you want to explore.
How you explore shapes your day: Cycling offers the most flexibility and coverage, while guided bus tours are a low-effort way to see key highlights. Beach-hopping near Thomson Bay is ideal if you prefer a slower pace.
Time planning for your visit: With minimal travel time, most visitors spend 5–8 hours on the island. This makes it easy to plan a full-day trip without feeling rushed.
What’s included in your ticket: Standard tickets usually include ferry transfers and entry. Combo options bundle experiences like bike hire or tours, best booked in advance for availability.
Island size & getting around: Rottnest stretches about 11 km, with attractions spread out. Walking is limited to the main areas, so bikes or tours are the best way to explore further.
Optional experiences to enhance your day: You can upgrade your trip with activities like snorkelling, Segway tours, or even skydiving for a more experience-driven visit.
Weather & seasonal considerations: Conditions are generally pleasant, but coastal winds can pick up, especially in the afternoon, impacting cycling and sea conditions.
Best time of day to travel: Morning ferries from Fremantle are the most popular, offering calmer conditions and more time to explore the island at your own pace.

Tips for your Fremantle to Rottnest Island tour
Start early to maximise your day: With such a short ferry ride, the first departure gives you the longest and most relaxed time on the island.
Book activities in advance: Bike hire and tours can sell out quickly, especially during peak periods.
Choose your travel style: Cycling gives you flexibility, while bus tours offer an easy, guided overview.
Plan your route ahead: Even with extra time, distances can add up—group nearby stops to avoid backtracking.
Carry water and sun protection: Shade is limited, especially if you’re exploring beyond the main areas.
Leave buffer time before your return ferry — Allow 30–45 minutes to get back to Thomson Bay stress-free.
Go beyond the main hub: Venture further out for quieter beaches and more scenic coastal views.
Make it a full-day experience: With minimal travel time, you can comfortably combine cycling, beach stops, and downtime in one trip.
Common mistakes to avoid on your Fremantle to Rottnest Island tour
Underestimating distances on the island: Rottnest Island may look small, but attractions are spread out—trying to cover too much without a plan can leave you rushed and tired.
Not pre-booking bikes or tours: Popular options like bike hire and guided tours often sell out, especially during weekends and peak seasons—leaving you with limited choices on arrival.
Taking a late ferry and running out of time: Departing late from Fremantle cuts down your island time significantly, making it harder to explore beyond Thomson Bay.
Skipping sun and wind protection: The island has limited shade and can get windy—without sunscreen, a hat, or a light layer, the experience can quickly become uncomfortable.
Trying to do the full island loop without planning: The 22 km loop sounds manageable, but without factoring in stops, weather, and fitness levels, it can feel more exhausting than expected.
Not carrying enough water or snacks: Food options are mainly around Thomson Bay, so if you’re heading further out, it’s important to stay hydrated and carry light snacks.
Forgetting to allow buffer time before your return ferry: Leaving it too late to head back can lead to stress or worse, missing your ferry—so always allow at least 30–45 minutes to return.

Excellent service from start to finish. The crew at Hillarys was very welcoming and the ferry was spacious and comfortable. Being able to park for free and enjoy a coffee at the harbor before boarding made the morning very relaxed. The return trip was just as smooth. I wouldn't use any other service to get to Rottnest

Fantastic trip down the Swan River from Perth's CBD to Rottnest via Fremantle. The commentary from the crew along the way was excellent and very informative for first time visitors to Perth.
Rottnest itself was fab, so beautiful. We choose a 1.5 ht bus tour right around the island. The driver was fantastic and told us the history of the settlement, so worth the money for those of us who had only one day on the island.
There are many nice places to stay on Rottnest from budget through to five star, it made me wish we had chosen to stay a while longer ourselves.
The little Quokkas for which the island is famous were numerous around the village center. There are signs up not to feed them as our food makes them sick.
All up a great day out on Rottnest, would thoroughly recommend the Sealink ferry from Perth CBD in combination with the bus tour of the island for those who only have one day. For those with more time on the island the hop on hop off buses might work well also.
