I loved how much knowledge Kevin our driver had about the island. Very interesting. Last time my husnand and I were there was January 1981! We are from Ipswich Qld.

Excellent service from start to finish. The crew at Hillarys was very welcoming and the ferry was spacious and comfortable. Being able to park for free and enjoy a coffee at the harbor before boarding made the morning very relaxed. The return trip was just as smooth. I wouldn't use any other service to get to Rottnest

Wearher held out, great day on the island. Walked instead of riding, enjoyed the convo, whilst we walked. Lunch at the bakery was yummy. Baby quokkas were so cute.

#We had a super day on Rottnest Island - in the end declining the bikes and doing the 'hop on/hop off' bus instead. It was gorgeous weather and we did some walking between bus stops and completed the circuit of the whole island. Also spent time on one of the fabulous beaches and enjoyed a picnic. And we met the quokkas....

Very helpful company, changed return ferry, no problem. Positive staff, amazing place to explore. Go for the bikes when exploring the place.

What a place! Hiring or taking a bike is absolutely the way to go. I caught the ferry which gets you there in 40-45 mins to the harbour from the settlement area. Which has a great variety of food outlets and information centres as to where to go. I made my way around to the basin to snorkel the aqua and turquoise water where there is also reefs and then further on to Catherine's beach. Quokkas just sit in bushes and are chilled. All I can say 5 hours was not enough and I'll definitely be back. Loved it.

See the full island, not just the easy parts

A bus tour covers the entire loop, including harder-to-reach areas like West End, which many self-guided visitors skip due to distance or time.

No navigation, no guesswork

Forget maps, routes, and time calculations. The itinerary is optimised so you hit the best viewpoints and landmarks without backtracking or missing key stops.

Context transforms the experience

It’s not just about seeing places—you’ll understand them. From Aboriginal heritage to WWII sites, guided commentary adds depth you won’t get exploring solo.

More efficient use of limited time

If you only have a few hours on Rottnest Island, a bus tour helps you experience more highlights in a structured, time-smart way.

Comfort over effort (especially in coastal conditions)

Rottnest’s heat, wind, and long cycling distances can be more tiring than expected. A coach tour keeps you comfortable while still delivering the views.

Things to know before booking your Rottnest Island bus tour

  • Loop tour, not transport: The tour starts and ends at Thomson Bay, following a fixed circular route. It’s designed as a sightseeing experience rather than point-to-point travel, making it easy to align with your ferry timings.
  • Best combined with ferry tickets: Most travellers book this with return ferry transfers for a seamless visit to Rottnest Island. Combo options simplify planning and help you manage your day more efficiently.
  • Short stops, not long breaks: The tour includes multiple scenic stops, but they are brief and time-controlled. You’ll have enough time for photos, not extended beach visits—plan extra free time if you want to relax or swim.
  • Great alternative to cycling: The island loop is around 22 km, which can be tiring in coastal conditions. This tour lets you cover key highlights comfortably without the physical effort.
  • Book your timing wisely: Taking the tour earlier in the day gives you flexibility afterward. You can spend the remaining time exploring beaches or relaxing around Thomson Bay.
  • Seats can fill up quickly: Bus tours have limited capacity per departure, especially during peak seasons. Booking in advance helps secure your preferred time slot and avoids last-minute disappointment.
  • Fixed schedule experience: This is a structured tour with a set route and timing, not a hop-on hop-off service. You’ll stay with the group throughout, which makes it efficient but less flexible.
  • Not a full-day activity: The experience lasts around 1.5 to 2 hours, leaving you with additional time on the island. Plan how you want to use that time to complete your visit.
  • Minimal walking required: Most viewpoints are easily accessible with short walks from the bus. This makes it a convenient option for families, seniors, and anyone looking for a low-effort experience.
  • Combine with other activities: Pair the tour with beach time, cafés, or short walks for a more complete experience. It works best as part of a broader island itinerary rather than a standalone activity.

How to plan your day around the bus tour

A little structure goes a long way on Rottnest Island. The bus tour is just 90 minutes, so how you place it in your day determines whether your visit feels relaxed or rushed.

Option 1: Start with the bus tour (most recommended)

Begin your day with the tour soon after arriving at Thomson Bay. This gives you a full overview of the island—so you know exactly where to spend your time later. After the tour, head back to spots you liked (beaches, viewpoints, cafés) and explore at your own pace.

Best for first-time visitors who want clarity before deciding what to do next.

Option 2: Explore first, then take the tour

If you prefer a slower start, spend your first hour around Thomson Bay—grab a coffee, spot quokkas, or visit a nearby beach like Pinky Beach. Then take the bus tour to cover the rest of the island without extra effort.

Works well if you don’t want to jump straight into a scheduled activity.

Option 3: Balanced day (most popular)

Combine structure with flexibility for a well-paced experience. Start with the bus tour, take a break for lunch, then spend your afternoon relaxing or beach-hopping. This approach avoids fatigue while still letting you see the island properly.

Ideal for most travellers looking for a stress-free day.

Option 4: Activity-first itinerary

If you’ve booked something like snorkelling at Parker Point or bike hire, do that first while energy levels are high. Take the bus tour later to cover areas you didn’t reach and get a broader perspective.

Best for active travellers who want to prioritise experiences.

Plan your bus tour

Bus tours on Rottnest Island run multiple times daily, making it easy to fit into your ferry schedule. Morning slots are the most popular as they give you more time to explore afterward.

  • Tour duration: 90 minutes to 2 hours
  • Best time: Morning departures for better time management
  • Good to know: Plan your tour early to maximise free time on the island

The bus tour starts from Thomson Bay, the island’s central hub and ferry arrival point. It’s easily accessible right after you disembark, with clear signage and short walking distances.

  • Start point: Thomson Bay
  • Access: Directly after ferry arrival
  • Best option: Combine with ferry transfers from Perth, Fremantle, or Hillarys

While the tour itself is comfortable, you’ll still step out at scenic stops, so a few essentials help. Packing light but smart ensures a more enjoyable experience.

  • Essentials: Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat
  • Stay hydrated: Carry a refillable water bottle
  • Extras: Camera/phone for photos, light jacket for coastal winds

The bus is air-conditioned and designed for comfort, making it suitable for most travellers. It’s one of the easiest ways to explore beyond the main settlement without physical effort.

  • Comfort: Seated coach with air-conditioning
  • Accessibility: Minimal walking required at stops
  • Best for: Families, seniors, and mobility-limited travellers

Tips for your Rottnest Island bus tour

  • Book early: Seats are limited per departure and can sell out quickly during peak periods.
  • Choose your seat smartly: Window seats (often left side) can offer better coastal views depending on the route.
  • Don’t rely on the tour alone: Combine it with free time to explore beaches or relax around Thomson Bay.
  • Be ready at stops: Photo breaks are short, so keep your camera or phone handy.
  • Start early for a relaxed day: Pairing the tour with an early ferry arrival gives you a well-paced, stress-free experience.

Common mistakes to avoid on your Rottnest Island bus tour

  • Treating it like a hop-on hop-off: This is a fixed loop tour, not flexible transport where you can get off and rejoin later. Once the tour starts, you’ll stay with the same group and follow a set route. Plan separate time if you want to revisit specific spots.
  • Booking it too late in the day: Afternoon slots can limit what you’re able to do afterward, especially if your ferry departs soon after. Taking the tour earlier gives you time to explore beaches or relax around Thomson Bay. Late bookings often make the day feel rushed.
  • Not combining with other activities: The bus tour is a highlights experience, not a full-day plan. If you rely only on it, you’ll miss out on beach time, quokka spotting, and local cafés. Pair it with free time to get a more complete island experience.
  • Assuming long stops: Most stops are short and designed for quick photos rather than extended exploration. You won’t have time for swimming or long walks at each location. Go in expecting a sightseeing overview rather than deep exploration.
